4 or 5 Days in Chongqing: The Perfect First-Timer’s Guide to the Magic City
Discover a world where gravity-defying architecture meets vibrant, glowing streets, and the breathtaking UNESCO site others don't tell you.

Ciqikou Ancient Town
Chongqing is rapidly gaining international fame for its futuristic cyberpunk architecture and dramatic mountain terrain. Navigating this multi-dimensional city can feel overwhelming, so we designed this realistic itinerary based on our firsthand experience travelling as a group of 8 adults. Testing these routes with a larger group helped us master the local logistics and daily pacing.
We think 5 days is the perfect amount of time for first-time visitors. That said, if you only have 4 days, you can easily trim this itinerary by dropping a few spots (see FAQ at the end of this post). This itinerary covers the absolute best of the city and includes an unforgettable day trip to the Wulong Karst UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Where to Stay at Chongqing
We stayed at the Glenview ITC Plaza Chongqing, located right near Jiefangbei 解放碑. We recommend basing yourself at Jiefangbei because it is the City's downtown core. Staying here gives you a central base for attractions, along with direct access to extensive food options and malls.
Day 1 : Explore Chongqing Urban Core
Chongqing is notoriously difficult to navigate. We highly recommend booking a walking tour at the very start of your trip to orientate yourselves and get some tips on food and others. We booked a walking tour from Guruwalk where our helpful guide could speak both English and Chinese fluently.
Scenic Cliffside Walk to Hongyadong
Our guided tour kicked off at Jiefangbei and passed through Kuixinglou 魁星楼, a mind-bending courtyard where you look over a street-level railing only to see traffic moving twenty-two floors directly below you.
From there, our guide led us along the Daijia Lane Old City Wall 戴家巷老城墙 and the Daijia Lane Cliffside Trail 戴家巷崖壁步道. This century-old cliff walk offers sweeping views of the Jialing River 嘉陵江 and Hongyadong 洪崖洞 while allowing you to bypass the main crowds and pass through some nice neighbourhood areas. We ended our walk along the newly opened Liangjianghui Riverside Path 两江汇江岸步道 straight to Chaotianmen 朝天门, saving Liziba for another day.
Face-Changing Show, Foot Massage and Shopping
At Chaotianmen, our guide introduced us to Daqi Teahouse 大奇茶馆 from Chengdu that just opened in May 2026. They host traditional performances daily at 1PM, 3:30PM, and 5:30PM. We sipped local tea, took a well-deserved break, and watched the entertaining face-changing show.
Directly next door is the futuristic Raffles City 来福士广场 mall. After some shopping, we headed to Changle 常乐 on Level 5 for foot massage. All of us highly recommend trying out the massage there!
✳️ Optional: Chongqing Outdoor Drone Show (every Saturday night)
To end the night, head across the river to Landmark Riverside Park 长嘉汇购物公园, to be positioned right in front of Chongqing’s massive and impressive drone show. However, we feel the show is not a must watch if you are on a tight schedule.
✅ Group Tip: Avoid the riverfront crowds by booking an outdoor patio table at the park's Japanese restaurant 榊燃堂. It requires a CNY 1,500 minimum spend, which can be hit with a larger group. From our table, we enjoyed an awesome, comfortable view of the drone formations and the glittering skyline across the river.
Day 2: Experience Chongqing Culture and Cyberpunk
Shancheng Budao (Mountain City Trail)
We started our morning at Shancheng Budao 山城步道, a century-old cliffside footpath winding past traditional stone houses and ruins. This route features shops nestled along cliffside walkways, an old primary school, and hospital ruins displaying a famous giant hand art installation "The Hand of Remembrance".
✅ Insider Tip: Avoid walking uphill. Get dropped off at the top entrance near Qixinggang Metro Station Exit 1 七星岗地铁站1号口 and walk downward. This keeps the entire trek effortlessly downhill. You can also skip the nearby Shibati 十八梯 since both areas feature ancient town with modern shops, but Shancheng Budao is more unique with its cultural landmarks and cliffside walkways.
Monorail at Liziba Station
Next, we went to Liziba Station 李子坝 to see the monorail move through the middle of a nineteen-story residential building. You can view this from the platform below.
Eling No. 2 Factory
From Liziba, you can stop at nearby Eling No. 2 Factory 二厂文创公园. This former industrial printing plant is now a trendy art district with graffiti walls and cafes. The vibes we got from this place is quite similar to Beicang, which we visited on Day 5. For those who enjoy mural arts, quirky photo spots and boutiques selling local craft, consider visiting both creative quarters. But if you only want a look at Chongqing’s creative side, simply pick the one that aligns best with your route.
Chongqing 1949 Show
In the afternoon, visit the grand theatre next to Ciqikou for the Chongqing 1949 show. This live-action performance uses massive moving sets and a talented cast to tell the city's revolutionary history. Despite the show being in Mandarin only, it is still a great way to escape the blistering midday heat.
For the best show experience, book the rotating seats in Zones A or B. Seats in these sections physically rotate 360 degrees to follow the moving stage, placing you right in the action.
Ciqikou Ancient Town 磁器口 and Deyi World
Since the grand theatre sits right at the edge of Ciqikou Ancient Town, you make a quick stop to this ancient town before or after your show. While the main street is heavily commercialised, the traditional architecture, iconic red lanterns and quirky photo spots still make for great instagrammable moments. Treat this as a brief, under-one-hour pit stop to grab some local snacks and snap a few pictures rather than spending a whole afternoon/evening here.
To end the night, head to Deyi World 得意世界. This entertainment district comes alive after dark with massive neon signs and towering billboards. We took a quick trip there to experience intense cyberpunk vibes but you could linger for drinks and KTV.
Day 3: Day trip to Wulong Karst National Geology Park
This is a must do! We booked the small group (1-8 pax) tour via Klook, which was ideal for our group of 8. The 3-hour drive each way is long but the vehicle was comfortable. Our driver gave an excellent introduction to both the area and Chongqing's history along the way. We highly recommend this tour.
On the way, we made a brief stop at a viewing platform to see the Wujiang River Gallery 乌江百里画廊. It offers a beautiful and serene view of the river cutting through towering limestone cliffs.
Three Natural Bridges
This UNESCO site features three massive stone arch bridges: Tianlong, Qinglong, and Heilong. You ride a 108-meter glass elevator down into the sinkhole floor to walk among the towering cliffs, see the Tianfu Post House 天福官驿, an ancient Tang-style courtyard and many bizarrely shaped karst formations.
✅ Insider Tip: Our driver sent us a file via WeChat detailing all the attractions to spot throughout the Three Bridges area. This list is incredibly useful for identifying the key rock formations (think of soaring carp and giant eagle), so make sure to save it.
Longshui Fissure Gorge
This is a narrow, deep fissure gorge. The trail feels more rustic and wild than the Three Bridges. The highlight is the impressive Galaxy Waterfall 银河飞瀑 cascading down the mossy cliff walls, where you can actually walk directly behind the falls. Note that due to the damp, steep steps and narrow boardwalks pinned to the canyon sides, this trail may not be suitable for the elderly or small children. If you are travelling with elderly or small children, our guide suggests visiting Fairy Mountain National Park instead.
Day 4: Immerse in Chongqing’s Ancient Banquets and Old Streets
Liyan Baguo Banquet & Hanfu Experience
Start your day with the Liyan Baguo Banquet 礼宴巴国 and a traditional Hanfu experience. This attraction pairs a cultural live live performances with a multi-course meal designed to make you feel as if you are attending an ancient royal banquet. We topped up the experience with a traditional Hanfu costume dress-up, and our entire group was satisfied with the quality of the makeup styling and the excellent selection of historic clothing. It was very fun dressing up, taking pictures and laughing at one another in our ancient royal attire.
The booking experience can be confusing because the website does not allow us to select 2 options in the same booking. For the complete Hanfu experience and banquet experience dressed in it, make 2 different bookings - “Guest Area (including costume change)” and “Makeup package (makeup + hair styling + photographer service, excluding meals”. You will receive emails for both bookings asking you about dietary restrictions for the meal and the other will share timing details about your Hanfu booking.
Longmenhao Old Street and Xiahaoli

The layers of Xiahaoli district, viewed from the main observation deck during the day.
We suggest heading to Longmenhao Old Street 龙门浩老街 in the late afternoon. When taking Didi, key in 龙门浩老街(上新街入口) (Amap link) as this drop-off point sits right at the top of Longmenhao, allowing you to walk downhill all the way. Arriving at this time allows you to explore the historic stone paths and head up to the Lanyuetai viewing platform 揽月台 while there is still natural daylight. This glass terrace offers a fantastic viewpoint to capture lovely photos of the Dongshuimen Yangtze River Bridge 东水门长江大桥.
From Longmenhao, continue your walk down into the adjacent Xiahaoli 下浩里 district, entering from the lower level. Cater at least an hour to stroll through the streets of Xiahaoli. The live music, winding historic trails and boutique shops form a charming and nostalgic atmosphere. Enjoy a relaxed meal here, then head to the Xiahaoli observation deck. This spot is a viral sensation on Chinese social media, yet the deck is not overly crowded. It offers the perfect vantage point to watch the town’s layers of night lights turn on.
✅ Insider Tip: These historic alleyways form a complex maze, and we got lost trying to find our way around! We highly recommend taking a picture of the area map displayed on boards throughout the district to help you navigate (see picture below).
After entering Xiahaoli from the lower level, look for the public lift tower at the bottom of the valley. Taking this lift up brings you right to the main road level, right outside Exit 2 of the district (see area map top right below). From this upper area, walk about 100m and you can see the popular "这很重庆" graffiti wall (shaded in pink below) before walking back downhill through the district. The observation deck in at the bottom left with the red marking “Best Photo Spot”.

Day 5: Modern City and Creative Quarters
Jiefangbei & Guanyinqiao Shopping
Since we stayed at Jiefangbei, we started our shopping right on our doorstep. If you want even more retail action, head across the river to Guanyinqiao 观音桥. It is a massive commercial hub packed with mega-malls and food streets. While you are there, you will see crowds on the pedestrian bridge to snap a photo with the massive “我在重庆” (I’m at Chonqing) digital sign.
✨ Optional Add-on: Pipashan Rainbow Stairs (If You Have Extra Time). If you love vibrant photo spots, take a short Didi ride up to the nearby Pipashan area 琵琶山正街-彩虹天梯 after finishing your morning at Jiefangbei and before heading across the river to Guanyinqiao. It features a colourful, painted staircase tucked inside an old residential neighbourhood.
Beicang Cultural and Creative Quarter
Just a short walk from the neon malls of Guanyinqiao sits the Beicang Cultural and Creative Quarter 北仓文创街区. Converted from an old textile factory, this quiet urban oasis features leafy pathways, themed coffee shops and artistic stalls. It provides a relaxed contrast to the busy shopping centers. For those on a tight schedule, choose either Beicang or Eling No. 2 Factory.

Beicang district is filled with many cute graffiti, alongside artistic shops.
Ultimate Finale: Hongyadong Night View

Hongyadong illuminated at night. The lights turn on between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM depending on the season's sunset.
Conclude your night with the iconic Hongyadong 洪崖洞 night view. Seeing the spectacular stilt houses lit up against the river canyon provides the ultimate finale to an old-meets-new day in Chongqing. You can easily slot this landmark view into any evening of your itinerary whenever you have free time.
✅ Insider Tip: To capture the absolute best panorama of Hongyadong without the crushing crowds on the main bridge, head to the Chongqing Grand Theatre 重庆大剧院 Station, Exit 4. The open plaza right outside offers a clean, unblocked view of the illuminated complex glittering across the river.

Chongqing Travel FAQ
Q1. How do you travel within Chongqing city? Is Didi good enough?
A1. Yes, Didi is convenient and we used it extensively. But we also explored some paths on foot, and it was the best way to experience the vertical layout of Chongqing. Even if you get lost along the way, just tell yourself it is part of the Chongqing experience! 😃
Q2. What if we do not know the exact drop-off point for multi-level attractions?
A2. Chongqing's vertical layout means many attractions have entry points at both the top and the bottom levels. Several times, our Didi drivers noticed we keyed in a bottom-level drop-off and proactively verified our plans with us. Once they realized we wanted to go to the top, the drivers simply drove us to the correct destination with no change to our fare. If unsure, double-check your destination with your Didi driver.
Q3. What are 24-hour spas?
A3. 24-hour spas are a popular all-in-one relaxation concept in China. During our trip, we went to a well-known chain called 金色印象. A standard massage package gives you access to a private room equipped with a large movie screen and an attached bathroom. The package cost covers unlimited la carte food (eg. crawfish, dumplings, noodles, etc.) and drinks. There is an option stay overnight (by topping up CNY 30), which saves you the cost of a hotel room for the night.
Q4. Can this itinerary be done in 4 days?
A4. Absolutely! You can easily compress the city itinerary by removing the banquet meal and Hanfu experience and skipping the optional places we highlighted. This allows you to slide some activities from Day 5 into Day 4 morning to mid afternoon, and move the Hongyadong night view to Day 1.
